Yes, you can usually put an aluminum pan in an air fryer, provided it is food-grade and oven-safe, fits comfortably inside the basket or oven, and is permitted by your model’s instructions.

Leave space around the pan for hot air to circulate, keep it away from the heating element, and never preheat with an empty lightweight disposable pan inside.

Aluminum pans work particularly well for cakes, saucy foods, baked dishes, and anything likely to drip. They are less suitable when you want maximum airflow and crisping around the food.

New to the air fryers? My beginner’s guide to using an air fryer explains how the heating element, basket, and circulating air work together.

⚡ The Short Answer

You can use an aluminum pan in an air fryer when:

  • The manufacturer’s instructions allow metal cookware.
  • You use a food-grade and oven-safe pan.
  • It fits with space around the edges for airflow.
  • It cannot touch the heating element.
  • Food is placed inside before the air fryer is switched on.
  • The pan is not being used for highly acidic ingredients.

Air fryers use a heating element and a powerful fan to circulate hot air around the food. The size and placement of your cookware can affect that circulation, so it’s worth following these air fryer best practices whenever you add pans, liners, or other accessories.

🛡️ Is It Safe to Put an Aluminum Pan in an Air Fryer?

An aluminum pan is generally safe to use when it is designed for cooking and your air fryer’s instructions permit oven-safe cookware.

The main concerns are not usually the aluminum itself. They are:

  • Restricting the circulation of hot air
  • Placing the pan too close to the heating element
  • Using a container that is too large
  • Allowing a lightweight pan to move around
  • Cooking acidic foods directly against bare aluminum
  • Removing a flexible disposable pan while it is full of hot food

These issues can normally be avoided by choosing the correct pan and positioning it carefully.

✅ How to Use an Aluminum Pan in an Air Fryer Safely

1. Check the Instruction Manual

Start by checking the instructions for your particular air fryer model.

Some manufacturers allow oven-safe pans and dishes, while others give more specific guidance about foil, metal containers, or accessories. Your air fryer may also have different instructions depending on whether it has a basket-style or oven-style design.

Do not assume that guidance for one air fryer automatically applies to another.

The same applies to other commonly questioned additions, including adding water to an air fryer, which should only be done in limited, model-appropriate situations.

2. Choose an Oven-Safe Pan

Only use a food-grade aluminum pan intended for cooking.

The pan should be able to withstand the temperature you plan to use without warping. Remove any plastic lid, paper label, cardboard base, or other packaging before placing it in the air fryer.

Avoid using aluminum containers that are badly bent, damaged, or extremely thin.

3. Make Sure It Fits

The pan should fit comfortably inside the air fryer without being wedged against the sides.

Leave some space around it so hot air can continue circulating. A pan that fills the entire basket can reduce airflow and lead to slower or less even cooking.

A small round or rectangular pan is often more suitable than a container that closely matches the complete size of the basket.

4. Position the Pan Correctly

In a basket-style air fryer, place the pan in the basket according to your manufacturer’s instructions. Do not place it underneath the basket or loose in the main appliance cavity.

In an oven-style air fryer, place it on the appropriate rack or baking tray. Avoid placing cookware directly on the floor of the appliance unless your manual specifically instructs you to do so.

The pan should never touch or sit extremely close to the heating element.

5. Add Food Before Switching on the Air Fryer

Do not preheat the air fryer with an empty lightweight disposable aluminum pan inside.

The powerful movement of air may cause a very light pan or loose piece of foil to shift. Add the food first so its weight helps keep the container securely in place.

This is particularly important when using shallow disposable pans.

6. Leave Room for Airflow

Airflow is what allows an air fryer to cook and brown food effectively.

The pan should not cover more of the perforated basket than necessary. Leave space around the sides where possible, and avoid covering ventilation openings or air channels.

Cooking inside a solid pan will naturally reduce the amount of hot air reaching the base of the food, so you may need to adjust the cooking time.

This is especially important for foods such as my vegan air fryer gnocchi, where direct circulation around the pieces is what creates the crisp exterior.

7. Check the Food During Cooking

Food cooked in an aluminum pan may behave differently from food spread directly across the air fryer basket.

The top may cook and brown more quickly than the bottom, while the center of a deep dish may take longer to heat through. Check the food during cooking and rotate the pan when possible if one side is browning more quickly.

Do not rely entirely on a cooking time written for food cooked directly in the basket.

8. Remove the Pan Carefully

Aluminum pans become very hot during cooking, and thin disposable pans can flex when lifted.

When the food is ready:

  1. Switch off the air fryer.
  2. Remove the basket or pull out the oven tray.
  3. Place it on a heat-resistant surface.
  4. Use oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves to lift the pan.
  5. Support a flexible pan from both sides to prevent it from bending or spilling.

I would avoid gripping a full disposable pan by one edge with kitchen tongs. The rim can bend, particularly when the pan contains hot liquid or heavy food.

Once the appliance has cooled, clean away any oil or food that may have spilled using the steps in my guide to cleaning an air fryer.

🔥 Will an Aluminum Pan Affect Air Fryer Cooking?

Using a pan changes how the hot air reaches your food.

Food placed directly in a perforated air fryer basket receives circulating air from above, below, and around the sides. A solid pan blocks much of the airflow underneath the food.

This means food cooked inside an aluminum pan may:

  • Take slightly longer
  • Brown more on top than underneath
  • Have a softer base
  • Need stirring or rotating
  • Produce less crisp results
  • Retain more sauce, moisture, and cooking juices

That does not make an aluminum pan a bad choice. It simply means it is more suitable for some foods than others.

🍽️ When an Aluminum Pan Works Well

An aluminum pan can be useful for:

  • Small cakes and baked desserts
  • Saucy dishes
  • Baked pasta
  • Casseroles
  • Marinated foods
  • Roasted vegetables with dressing
  • Foods that may drip through the basket
  • Small portions that need to stay contained
  • Recipes with flavorful juices you want to keep

A properly sized pan can also turn the appliance into a compact baking oven, which is handy for small cakes, baked desserts, and recipes such as air fryer flatbread pizza.

It is also convenient when you need to transfer the cooked food somewhere else or reduce cleanup.

⚠️ When Not to Use an Aluminum Pan

When You Want Maximum Crispiness

For recipes such as my vegan air fryer chicken nuggets or crispy air fryer gnocchi, cooking directly in the perforated basket allows more hot air to reach the underside.

A pan can protect the food from the circulating air that creates the crisp texture you are looking for.

When the Pan Is Too Large

Do not force a pan into the basket or use one that completely blocks the air channels.

A smaller pan is normally a better option, even when it means cooking the food in separate batches.

When Cooking Acidic Foods

Tomatoes, citrus juice, vinegar, and other strongly acidic ingredients can react with bare aluminum. This may discolor the pan or give the food a metallic flavor. A non-reactive oven-safe container is a better option for these dishes.

For acidic recipes, consider using:

  • Stainless steel
  • Suitable ceramic cookware
  • An air-fryer-safe silicone container
  • Another non-reactive dish approved for your appliance

Acidic ingredients such as tomatoes, citrus juice, and vinegar can react with bare aluminum, potentially discoloring the container or giving the food a metallic taste.

When the Manufacturer Says Not To

Do not use an aluminum pan when your air fryer’s instructions advise against metal pans, foil, or third-party accessories.

🎂 Can You Put an Aluminum Cake Pan in an Air Fryer?

Yes, you can usually put an aluminum cake pan in an air fryer, as long as it is oven-safe, fits properly, and is permitted by your appliance manufacturer.

Leave some space around the pan so hot air can circulate. You may also need to reduce the temperature slightly or check the cake earlier than you would when using a conventional oven, as air fryers can brown the top quickly.

A shallow pan often cooks more evenly than a deep pan because the center of the batter is closer to the heat.

🥡 Can You Put a Disposable Aluminum Pan in an Air Fryer?

Disposable aluminum pans can usually be used, but they require a little extra care.

Because they are lightweight:

  • Do not place an empty pan inside during preheating.
  • Add the food before switching on the air fryer.
  • Make sure the pan cannot move toward the heating element.
  • Avoid overfilling it with liquid.
  • Support it carefully when removing it.

A sturdier aluminum pan may be easier to handle when cooking heavier or more liquid-based recipes.

🍳 Can You Put a Metal Pan in an Air Fryer?

Most small oven-safe metal pans can be used in many air fryers. This can include aluminum, stainless steel, and other bakeware designed for oven use.

However, the pan still needs to:

  • Fit inside the appliance
  • Stay away from the heating element
  • Allow sufficient airflow
  • Be suitable for the cooking temperature
  • Comply with the manufacturer’s instructions

Do not use cookware simply because it is made from metal. Check that it is genuinely designed for cooking.

📄 Can You Put Aluminum Foil in an Air Fryer?

Aluminum foil is different from an aluminum pan because it is much lighter and easier for circulating air to lift.

When your air fryer model permits foil:

  • Keep it secured beneath food.
  • Do not use it loose during preheating.
  • Do not cover the complete basket.
  • Keep it away from the heating element.
  • Do not block the air vents.
  • Avoid wrapping highly acidic ingredients in it.

Foil or cooking paper may be used cautiously for small foods that could fall through the basket, but it should always be positioned so it cannot reach the heating element.

Guidance from Ninja and America’s Test Kitchen experts explain that loose foil or parchment needs to remain securely beneath food and away from the upper heating element.

🔄 Aluminum Pan Alternatives

Air fryer safe options to use, including parchment paper, aluminum pan and oven safe dish.

An aluminum pan is not always the most suitable option. Depending on the recipe, you could use:

Stainless Steel

A small oven-safe stainless steel pan is sturdy, reusable, and non-reactive.

Silicone Containers

Air-fryer-safe silicone containers are flexible and reusable. Choose one that leaves enough space for air to circulate around it.

Ceramic Cookware

A small ceramic dish may work for baked dishes and acidic foods, provided it is suitable for the temperature and approved for use in your appliance.

Parchment Paper Liners

Perforated parchment paper can help prevent sticking while allowing some air to move through the basket.

Never place loose parchment paper inside an empty air fryer during preheating. It must be held down by food so it cannot rise toward the heating element.

The Air Fryer Basket

For foods that need to become crisp, the original perforated basket or crisper plate is often the best option.

🧪 What Happened When I Tested an Aluminum Pan?

For this test, I used a small disposable aluminum pan that fit inside the air fryer basket with visible space around the edges. I added the food before switching on the appliance so the lightweight pan stayed securely in place.

Food in an aluminum pan in an air fryer.

I tested a small 7 × 5-inch disposable aluminum pan in my Ninja Foodi air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for 18 minutes. I filled the pan with a single layer of chopped mixed vegetables and stirred them once halfway through cooking.

The vegetables cooked evenly and browned around the top edges, but they needed around three minutes longer than they usually would directly in the basket. The pieces touching the bottom of the pan also stayed slightly softer because less hot air could circulate underneath them.

Overall, the aluminum pan worked well and stayed securely in place once it contained food.

I’d use this method again for saucy dishes, baking, or foods where keeping the cooking juices matters, but I’d cook directly in the basket when crispness is the priority.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Does an aluminum pan need holes in it?

Not necessarily. A solid pan can be used for baking and saucy dishes, but it will reduce the airflow underneath the food.

For foods that need to become crisp, a perforated pan or the original air fryer basket will usually give better results.

Can an aluminum pan touch the sides of the air fryer?

It is better to leave some space around the pan. This helps the hot air circulate and makes it easier to insert and remove the pan safely.

Can I cover an aluminum pan with foil?

You can loosely cover a dish when the manufacturer permits foil, but make sure the covering is secure and cannot lift toward the heating element.

A tightly sealed container can trap steam and pressure, so do not completely seal the pan.

Do I need to change the cooking time?

Possibly. A solid pan restricts the hot air reaching the base and sides of the food, so the recipe may take slightly longer.
Check the food early, then continue cooking in short intervals as needed.

Can I use an aluminum takeout container?

Only when every part of the container is oven-safe. Remove plastic lids, cardboard covers, paper labels, and other packaging first.

Make sure the container is clean, undamaged, and suitable for cooking rather than storage only.

Can I reuse a disposable aluminum pan?

You may be able to reuse it when it remains clean, intact, and free from deep creases or holes. Discard it if it becomes badly bent, damaged, or difficult to clean properly.

So, can you put an aluminum pan in an air fryer? In most cases, yes.

Choose a food-grade, oven-safe pan that fits without blocking the entire basket. Keep it away from the heating element, add food before switching on the air fryer, and always follow the instructions supplied with your particular model.

Aluminum pans are most useful for cakes, baked dishes, sauces, and foods that release juices. For recipes where crispiness is the priority, cooking directly in the air fryer basket will usually give better results.
