About Brazil Nuts

Brazil nuts are a type of nut that comes from the Brazil nut tree, which is native to the Amazon rainforest in South America.

Brazil nuts have a subtle, nutty flavor that is not overpowering, making them a great base for many recipes.

Nutritional Benefits

They are a rich source of healthy, monounsaturated fats, magnesium, and essential nutrients like vitamin E and are known to help reduce the risk of heart disease. In addition, they are also a an excellent source of protein, which is essential for muscle growth and repair.

Making homemade Brazil nut butter is a simple and delicious way to add more essential nutrients and heart-healthy fats to your diet. With just a few ingredients, you can create a tasty and nutritious spread that you can enjoy in a variety of different ways.

Selenium in Brazil Nuts

Brazil nuts are a rich source of selenium, so it's important to consume them in moderation. Consuming too much selenium can lead to selenium toxicity, which can cause symptoms such as hair and nail loss, nausea, and fatigue.

The recommended daily intake is around 55 micrograms per day and just two Brazil nuts can tip you over the recommended daily amount. However, the exact amount varies depending on age, gender, and overall health.

However, when consumed in appropriate amounts, the high selenium content in Brazil nuts can provide health benefits such as supporting thyroid function and boosting the immune system.

Please note that the health benefits for brazil nuts listed here are for informational purposes only, and I recommend you do your own research, if you want to find out more about the nutritional value of brazil nuts.

What’s great about making nut butter at home

Homemade nut butter can be a healthier option compared to store-bought nut butter because it is made with natural ingredients and contains no added preservatives, palm oil or artificial flavors. Additionally, making nut butter at home allows you to customize the flavor and texture to your liking.

Ingredients & Notes

To make homemade Brazil nut butter, you will need the following ingredients:

Raw brazil nuts in a measuring cup.
  • Raw Brazil Nuts - the main ingredient for this nut butter
  • Salt - adds flavor to the nut butter, I love to use sea salt
  • Coconut oil - used to help blend the nuts and gives a creamy texture
  • Cacao powder - adds a chocolatey flavor to the nut butter
  • Maple syrup - a natural sweetener that complements the nutty flavor

Find the full measurements in the recipe card at the bottom of this blog.

Equipment

Here's everything you need for this recipe:

  • Baking sheet + parchment paper
  • High-speed blender or food processor

While it is possible to make nut butter with a hand blender, it may take longer and require more effort than using a high-speed blender or food processor, so I definitely recommended to use a high-speed blender or food processor for best results.

Instructions (Step-by-Step)

Here are the step-by-step instructions for making homemade Brazil nut butter:

Transfer to a glass jar to store.

Useful tip: Roasting nuts before making nut butter helps to enhance their natural flavors and oils, making for a creamier and more flavorful end product. It also helps to remove any excess moisture from the nuts.

Storage

To store this homemade Brazil nut butter, place it in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
