'Tis the season to be jolly! Well, we're not quite there yet, but a pumpkin spice latte is definitely making me jolly and I always wait for the season to come around to justify my pumpkin spice intake, ha!
Nowadays, pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks are vegan-friendly in the United Kingdom and you can easily order a vegan pumpkin spice latte by opting for plant milk.
For all your other pumpkin spice latte needs, there's this simple vegan recipe, that allows you to make your own pumpkin spice syrup at home and enjoy your pumpkin spice latte whenever you feel like it. Whoop!
Ingredients for vegan pumpkin spice syrup
- 130 g golden caster sugar
- 200 ml water
- 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ginger powder
- ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
- 2 whole cardamom pods
- a pinch of ground nutmeg
Equipment:
- nonstick saucepan
- Spatula and whisk
- A fine sieve
- Airtight container for storage
How to make vegan pumpkin spice syrup
It's all of the ingredients for the syrup in a medium-size nonstick saucepan. Heat on a low/medium heat stirring or whisking regularly until the majority of the water has evaporated. The mixture should become thick and sticky after a couple of minutes and become more syrup-like.
Run the syrup through a small sieve to filter out any big pieces of the spices and then pour your syrup into an airtight and heatproof container.
How to make a vegan pumpkin spice latte
To assemble your vegan pumpkin spice latte, add 1 tablespoon of the pumpkin spice syrup to your coffee mug. Pour in 1 shot of freshly brewed espresso (or 2 if it's a Monday) and stir to dissolve the syrup in the hot coffee.
Add frost barista plant milk on top and, if you're feeling fancy, decorate with whipped vegan cream, sprinkles, cinnamon, chocolate and more.
