    These Sweet Potato Cinnamon Rolls are my new favorite twist on the classic cinnamon roll! They are packed with natural sweetness from sweet potatoes - these rolls are perfect for any time of year.

    The soft, fluffy dough rises beautifully, creating golden-brown swirls that are irresistible. Each bite delivers a comforting blend of warm spices, making these vegan sweet potato rolls a wonderful indulgence. So decadent!

    I love how easy this recipe is to follow, using simple ingredients you probably already have at home. And the creamy vegan cream cheese frosting is the cherry on the top. These rolls are not just for dessert - they make a tasty breakfast or snack, too.

    • Flour - This is the base for your sweet potato cinnamon rolls. Use all purpose flour (plain flour) and make sure it's fresh for best results. You can substitute with gluten-free flour if needed, but the texture may vary slightly.
    • Instant Yeast - Aka Active Dry Yeast. Helps the dough rise quickly. Make sure it's fresh for the best results. If you're unsure, test a little bit of the yeast first to ensure it's still active.
    • Sugar - Adds sweetness and activates the yeast. Regular granulated sugar works just fine.
    • Salt - Enhances the flavor of the cinnamon roll dough. Don't skip it!
    • Plant-Based Milk - Almond or oat milk are great vegan options. Ensure it's at room temperature to mix well with other ingredients.
    • Cooked and Mashed Sweet Potato - Adds natural sweetness and moisture. You can use canned sweet potato puree or make your own. I used a large sweet potato for this recipe, roasted it, removed the peel once cooled and then mashed until smooth. How To Tell if Sweet Potatoes Are Bad?
    • Vegan Butter - Adds richness and flavor to the dough and filling. Make sure it's softened for easy mixing.
    • Brown Sugar & Ground Cinnamon- These form the classic cinnamon sugar filling. Feel free to adjust the cinnamon to your taste.
    • Vegan Cream Cheese - For a creamy, tangy cream cheese frosting. Let it soften before mixing for a smooth texture.
    • Powdered Sugar - Sweetens the cream cheese frosting. Sift it first to avoid lumps.
    • Vanilla Extract - Adds depth of flavor to the frosting. Use pure vanilla extract if possible for the best taste.

    🧑‍🍳 Instructions (Step-by-Step)

    Step 1: Prepare Dough

    Mix flour, yeast, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Separately mix the sweet potato mash and wet ingredients. Add sweet potato mixture to flour mixture to form dough.

    Step 2: Knead and Rise

    Knead dough on a lightly floured surface. If using a stand mixer with dough hook, knead on low speed. Let it rise in a greased bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer for an hour.

    Step 3: Roll and Fill

    Roll dough into a rectangle. Spread butter and sprinkle cinnamon sugar.

    Step 4: Shape Rolls

    Roll dough into a log. Cut into rolls with a knife or dental floss.

    Step 5: Second Rise

    Place rolls in a greased dish. Let rise for 30 minutes.

    Step 6: Bake

    Bake rolls at 180°C (350°F) for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

    Step 7: Make Frosting

    Beat vegan cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth.

    Step 8: Serve

    Ingredients
      

    • 2 cups all purpose flour (240g) plain flour
    • 2 ¼ teaspoon instant yeast / dry active yeast (7g)
    • 2 tablespoon sugar
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ⅔ cup plant-based milk (150 ml) almond milk or oat milk
    • ½ cup cooked and mashed sweet potato (100g)
    • 3 tablespoon vegan butter melted

    For the cinnamon filling:

    • 3 tablespoon vegan butter softened
    • ⅓ cup brown sugar (75g)
    • 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    For the cream cheese frosting:

    • ½ cup vegan cream cheese (100g)
    • ½ cup powdered sugar (50g)
    • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

    Instructions
     

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the plain flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. Stir them well to ensure they are evenly mixed.
    • In a separate bowl, mix the plant-based milk, mashed sweet potato, and melted vegan butter. Ensure the mixture is smooth and well combined.
    • Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients. Use a spoon or spatula to stir until a dough forms. It might be sticky, but that's okay.
    • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead it with your hands for about 5 minutes. The dough should become smooth and elastic.
    • Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
    • While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish to prepare for the rolls.
    • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to remove air bubbles. Roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangle, about ¼ inch thick.
    • Spread softened vegan butter evenly over the dough. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture over the buttered dough.
    • Starting from the long edge, roll the dough into a tight log. Use a sharp knife or dental floss to cut the log into 12 equal rolls.
    • Place the rolls in the greased baking dish, leaving space between each. Cover with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
    • Bake the cinnamon rolls in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes. They should be golden brown and fragrant.
    • While the rolls are baking, prepare the frosting. Beat vegan cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl until smooth.
    • Once baked, allow the rolls to cool for a few minutes. Drizzle the cream cheese frosting over them while they are still warm. Serve and enjoy the deliciousness!

      I made these on Tuesday (12 rolls) it’s Thursday and I am making them again. These sweet potato cinnamon rolls are absolutely delicious. This will be my favorite go to recipe for cinnamon rolls going forward.
