    Vegan Rice Paper Bacon

Soooo... this has been in the planning for quite some time and last Sunday it finally happened: MY FIRST RECIPE VIDEO FOR THE BEST VEGAN BACON RECIPE FINALLY WENT LIVE!

I am pretty excited to show you how I make vegan bacon - or "Facon" as I call it - in my first video. For months I have been planning around, getting new lighting equipment, and trying to decide which recipe to film and upload first.

    What you'll need

    Ingredients

    The base:
    • Rice Paper: The base for this vegan bacon is made from rice paper. One it touches liquid it will become soft and stringy, which makes it perfect for the creation of vegan bacon.
    • oil for frying
    • water from the tap
    For the marinade:
    • Tamari soy sauce (gluten-free)
    • smoked paprika powder
    • garlic powder
    • nutritional yeast
    • liquid smoke
    • ground pepper
    • maple syrup (or agave)

    Equipment

    • bowl
    • whisk
    • non-stick frying pan
    • OR oven & on-stick baking paper

    How to make vegan bacon

To make this delicious vegan bacon recipe, start by either pre-heating a little oil in a frying pan or pre-heat your oven to 180C.

Add all ingredients for the marinade to a medium-size bowl and whisk them up to create the smokey & salty marinade for your vegan bacon. The marinade should be sufficient for about 8 regular size rice papers, but please adjust the number of ingredients in case you want to make more!

Take each rice paper and hold it under the running tap water to wet it completely on both sides. Let any excess water drip off and place the paper down on a cutting board. Let it rest for 1 minute to soften, then fold up the rice paper into a 'bacon' strip. You can decide how big you want your bacon strip to be, but I'd recommend folding it at least 3 times to create a thicker, multi-layer vegan bacon.

Gently drop the strip of facon into the marinade until the marinade is stuffed to all surfaces of the facon. Allow any excess to drip off, then place your facon into the frying pan or onto a greased baking tray. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes on medium heat, or until the edges begin to crisp up, then flip the vegan bacon in the pan.

If you're oven baking your facon, then flip it after 8 minutes and cook it for a further 4 minutes on the other side.

Repeat with the rest of your rice papers, but make sure not to overcrowd your pan, otherwise, they might get stuck together.

Variations for the best vegan bacon recipe

    Oven baked or pan-fried

You can prepare this vegan bacon recipe either in a greased non-stick frying pan or on a greased oven tray with non-stick baking parchment.

Both methods will bring out slightly different results. When pan-frying you will need to utilize oil in your pan, to ensure the facon does not get stuck to it. When it's oven-baked on a silicone mat, you can entirely omit the oil and the facon will come out more dry and crispy than in the pan-fried version.

Below you can see some examples of pan-fried vegan bacon at the top, and oven-baked at the bottom. Whichever you will pick is down to your personal preference.
